How Every Month of the Year Can bring You something New There is more to each month of the year than you probably realise and it doesn’t cost you anything to find this out. I am going to show you some surprising things about the months that you might not know … and if you stick around to the end I will give you something to use as a gift or pass on to share with others Why am I doing this? Well, I have designed and sold nearly 2000 personalised posters of one kind or another that contain information about each year of the last century but lately, many people have asked about specific days. I decided I could create something for each day of the year and group them into months. It’s when I started doing this in detail that I became fascinated by some of the facts I discovered along the way. More on that later, but first let me share some of those less common bits of information. Why are September and October ‘special’ months?In the Roman calendar, there were originally only ten months - September to December being the 7th - 10th months (as the prefixes of Sept, Oct, Nov, and Dec, might suggest). The Roman year used to start in March and it had a winter period of ‘non-months’ to take up the gap as January and February didn’t exist. It was only later when July and August were used to rename the fifth and sixth months (Quintilles and Sextillis), after Julius and Augustus Caesar and January and February were added that things seemed to have got out of sequence. • April: April 1st is known as April Fools' Day. It is not proven to be the direct reason behind it, but one theory is that it dates back to the 16th century when France switched to the Gregorian calendar. Those who continued to celebrate the New Year in April were considered "April fools."
• October is known for the Harvest Moon, which is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. It traditionally allowed farmers to work late into the night, harvesting their crops under its bright light. Harvesting is something that has now moved forward due to world weather patterns! • November Many world events have taken place in November, dozens of US presidents have taken office - more on November 4th than on any other day. Sadly one terrible event occurred on November 22nd 1963 when President Kennedy was shot dead, but the very next day the first episode of the TV show Doctor Who was shown on British television, and that first episode had to be repeated the following week as so many missed it due to the trauma surrounding Kennedy’s untimely death. • December is the month that has the most religious celebrations, festivals or feast across all religions. (At least 14) How can the months of the year actually help you?Having knowledge of something makes it mean more to you in your daily life. Since I have been interested in this it has made a huge difference to me. I appreciate more the unusually warm days in the spring months, the anniversaries of important historical events, and the importance of celebrating, or at least remembering certain dates in the year because I know more about them than I used to. But this is just the useful foundation stuff that is good to know. The real fun starts when you look around you at people you know who don’t know this stuff and probably many of them don’t seem very interested… but I am here to tell you that actually, people are. There are 365 days in a year and one of those days at least is special to everyone you know.
